It wasn’t just a win that the WCMS soccer team was looking for Friday against Coffee County. The Pioneers wanted to crush their rivals.
Behind hat tricks from both Parker Jones and Austin Breedlove, Warren County did just that as it beat the visiting Red Raiders 9-0 at home. A last-minute goal from WCMS enacted the mercy rule as the group went 2-0 on opening week, ultimately outscoring Coffee County and Franklin North 15-0.
“Counting our scrimmage the week before, we’ve scored 24 goals in three games,” said coach Johnny Smith. “The potential is high for this group as long as we see the path and keep moving forward. Several boys have begun to take leadership roles.
“One young man is working to take our role of ‘director’ and I couldn’t be more excited to see the growth we’ve gained so far. The sky is the limit with these young Pioneers.”
Jones was relentless for the Pioneers from the opening kickoff. He needed just eight minutes to score three goals, showing off impressive speed and a powerful and accurate leg while giving WCMS full control early.
Breedlove, already off to a hot start with two goals in the opener, also got rolling for the Pioneers. He helped the team keep pressure for the Coffee County goal all night, ultimately running his first week goal count to five before the night was over.
Kredence Miller, Eastlan Green and Samuel Wheatley all got on the board before the blowout was done, while Joshau Fajardo added a helper to the Pioneers’ cause.
Overall, the back-to-back blowouts were a great sign to coach Smith, who saw his team overcome some obstacles to star in two Central Tennessee Conference wins.
“I worried about sickness and weather as it plagued us and cost us practice time going into the season, but we responded well to competition this first week in well-rounded fashion. The boys have worked hard to show who is our ‘finisher’ and I think we’ve found a couple of them,” said Smith.
Warren County will get a chance to go for three straight wins Tuesday when the group takes on DeKalb County on the road. Action is set to start at 6 p.m.
